Devenaire‘s music is relatable and impactful, which makes for a great listening experience. Today, he released a new single and visual titled, WIGB (What It’s Gone Be) and the message hits home for many listeners. The door has opened to a much bigger conversation surrounding the pitfalls of dating as a millennial.

WIGB reveals a common reality in dating that is realizing your worth and not allowing yourself to be a second option. Often times, when dating the signs are there. Some choose to tolerate being put through emotional strain in the name of love or a deep emotional connection. This song in particular seems to be from the perspective of someone who has been on and off with someone who can’t make up their mind. When the video begins, it’s unclear whether or not the two individuals are in a relationship, but you see that she doesn’t physically engage when he tries to hold her hand. The first verse also opens with “Why I always gotta wake up out my sleep, missed calls and texts saying you need me? Thing is you can have me if you want me. We talk about it. I’m serious you don’t be.” These words alone give me insight that he is playing the “rebound” role, hoping to take the place of her inconsistent boyfriend. In turn, he gives her an ultimatum: him or me. The second verse offers insight from her on-again-off-again boyfriend, who gives her the same ultimatum.

The video offers an interesting perspective, which makes it hard to feel for anyone in the matter. It does raise concerns about their intentions and sparks various relationship/dating debates. After viewing the video, it’s hard to pick sides because everyone is at fault and enabling behaviors in some way. I can’t sympathize with the first guy because his intentions don’t seem pure, she’s unsure of who she wants and the second guy is aggressive. In order to truly “solve” the problem, each person should go their separate ways.

Another great song and visual from Devenaire! I’m interested to know how others perceive the video and the different perspectives. Is there a happy ending? Is one person more at fault than the others?

Devenaire states:

“Never be a second option to anyone. You are valuable and should be treated as royalty. Always follow your intuition and never take no sh*t. Respect yourself first.”
