The Scoop
Question.
Did you know that chemicals are used to create sanitary napkins and tampons?
Question.
Did you know that chemicals like bleach and toxins are frequently used in the manufacturing?
Yeah, crazy huh?
But wait, there’s more to come.
Many women are unaware about the hidden dangers of sanitary pads and tampons. You also have women that are very aware, yet choose to overlook this health hazard. I must admit that I’m guilty of knowing about the dangers and overlooking this important issue because you never think you will catch any harmful effects. It’s like we take this for granted.
Your skin is your largest and most absorbent organ. Anything you place on or against it is absorbed into your bloodstream. The lining of the vagina happens to be exceptionally absorbent, which is the scary part.
Toxins Found in Sanitary Pads and Tampons
- Chlorine: Chlorine is used to turn products into a white, clean-looking, “pure” color.
- Dioxins, furans, and disinfection byproducts (DBPs): The bleaching process creates toxins, such as dioxin, and DBPs, like trihalomethane. Dioxin is in the same family as Agent Orange. The Environmental Protection Agency labels it a serious health threat, stating there’s no “safe” level of exposure to it because it accumulates in tissue. Dioxin also has a very long half-life, meaning it remains in your fatty tissues for up to 11 years. Also, Dioxins are known carcinogens linked to reproductive, developmental, and hormonal problems. They also sabotage your immune system.
- Petrochemicals: 90 percent of plastic is made from crude oil. This plastic restricts airflow. It traps dampness and heat, and can promote the growth of yeast and bacteria, which upsets the delicate balance needed to remain healthy. If it’s labeled “non-woven,” “highly absorbent foam” or “polyethylene,” take it as a red flag that it contains petrochemicals. Having petrochemicals against your skin can be dangerous in the long term. Sensitive individuals may also experience burning, chafing, and soreness.
- Pesticides: Most of the cotton used in tampons and pads is conventionally-grown and conventional cotton is one of the most heavily sprayed crops.
- GMOs: According to the USDA, 94 percent of all cotton grown in the U.S. today is genetically modified. Activists say GMOs are linked to many health problems, including allergies, leaky gut syndrome, inflammation, and cancer.
- Synthetics: You will be surprised on how hard it is to find 100% cotton tampons or pads these days. Most are made from synthetics, like rayon, viscose, and super absorbent powders (SAPs). They may also be laced with artificial colors, adhesives, polyester, polyethylene (PET), polypropylene, and propylene glycol (PEG).
- Fragrance: Fragrances are also can known carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, irritants, and allergens. Many of today’s pads and tampons come in scented versions.
So what’s next? Don’t know where to find an all natural sanitary pad?
For an all natural sanitary pad, I would recommend Cherish Premium Sanitary Pads.
Whats so special about Cherish Premium?

- Cherish pads have been designed by women for women.
- The first layer is 100% pure cotton.
- The second layer is an all-natural negative ion strip, which helps balance pH and hormone levels, helps protect against germs and bacteria, reduces inflammation, fights against vaginal irritations and infections, and reduces unwanted odor.
- The third layer is airlaid paper that provides additional protection from unwanted leaks.
- The fourth layer is a super-absorbent and safe polymer.
- The fifth layer is an enhanced flow layer that has been designed to prevent reverse percolation. Basically, it absorbs and moves dampness away from the body.
