Teaching isn’t what I do, it’s who I am.
Teaching isn’t easy by any means and I learned that first hand. I wanted to make an impact in the lives of students, especially those who look like me. I’ve narrowed down my first year in the classroom to six key takeaways.
One of the things I love most about teaching 5th graders is that they’re not shy about calling you out. Rather it be for your shoes not matching your shirt just right or you spelling something wrong on the board, trust me, you’ll know about it. It keeps me on my toes.
To be young, teaching, and black sometimes feels like the most difficult thing in the world. But I am reminded that it is also the most rewarding thing in the world.
Too many of us have already gone unnoticed and unheard, and have given up. We can’t allow generations of us to do the same.
